The Hard Truth
Every day – more than 10 young drivers age 15-20 are killed in crashes and another 745 are injured. About 25% of crashes killing young drivers involve alcohol. 39% of young male drivers and 26% of young female drivers were speeding at the time of their fatal crash. Although young drivers only represent 6% of all licensed drivers, they are the drivers in 16% of all traffic crashes. The Northern Illinois Soccer League is joining the National Safety Council in urging all parents to familiarize themselves with the risks associated with young, inexperienced drivers.
Parents should not rely solely on driver education to provide teens the significant knowledge and experience that they need to become safe drivers. Completing driver education should be viewed as the beginning of the learning process, not the end. The National Safety Council offers an innovative, three-hour course to get parents more involved in their teen’s learning to drive process. Defensive Driving Course-Alive at 25 ® Parent Program helps parents reinforce their teen’s basic driving skills and good decision-making to help them become safe, responsible, and defensive drivers.
